The Movie's Storyline:
In 1987, five young men, using brutally honest rhymes and hardcore beats, put their frustration and anger about life in the most dangerous place in America into the most powerful weapon they had: their music. Taking us back to where it all began, Straight Outta Compton tells the true story of how these cultural rebels-armed only with their lyrics, swagger, bravado and raw talent-stood up to the authorities that meant to keep them down and formed the world's most dangerous group, N.W.A. And as they spoke the truth that no one had before and exposed life in the hood, their voice ignited a social revolution that is still reverberating today.
It has been almost 2 weeks that this Universal Pictures’ N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton, directed by F. Gary Gray, has been in theaters and who would of thought it would gross a total of $111 million. I mean I think the concept of the movie is something that we all viewed when the Eazy-E Documentary and N.W.A. (Niggas With Attitudes) The World's Most Dangerous Group, Narrated by Chris Rock that premiered years ago on VH1.
Oh no the hip hop fans wanted more, they wanted to see on the big screen how the American hip hop gangsta rap group from Compton vocalized their true feelings about the police, women, and thug life. This rap group endured controversy due to their explicit lyrics that many considered to be disrespectful to women, and glorifying drugs and crime.
There has been raving reviews about this movie. I haven’t seen the movie yet and honestly am a little reluctant to go see it, as I sort of already know the story. The only reason I would go see this movie is to support the African American (AA) director as I feel we need more writers and directors but I don’t necessarily think we need these writers to always tell a hood story. Yes it’s great that these talented guys from an impoverished area worked extremely hard to become millionaires but what other stories do we in the AA community have to tell? Yes, we have struggled more than some but is that our only store? I think AA directors and producers can be more creative, think outside the urban neighborhoods and/or relationship issues amongst AA women and men. I digressed, but overall it’s good that people are enjoying this film.
According to www.imdb.com, out of 122 critics’ reviews about this movie they gave it an 8.5 out of 10. Below are a few people reviews, so are you convinced?
